Guest Speaker: Philip Mullen
Dr.
Philip Mullen served as USC art professor from 1969 and retired in 2000.
Art collections that can boast having his work include locations across the
US (from our own Columbia Museum of Art to Guggenheim Museum NY to Max
Factor in Hollywood CA) and the world (Sonje Museum in Korea and Crown
Prince Fadio Abdulaziz, Saudia Arabia. He is a skillful draughtsman as
shown in his masterful drawing of the USC library from the difficult
perspective of the south balcony. His koi paintings are full of lively
movement and rich color. His 12 foot work hanging in Neiman Marcus of
Dallas Texas was featured in a movie. Currently he is working on another solo
exhibition for the David Findlay Gallery in NY with whom he has had 12 solo
shows since 1975. (See David Findlay Galleries on the web) He is an artist
treasure living here in SC.
Philip's program was educational and entertaining. Using a PowerPoint presentation, Philip showed the development of several pieces of his work from the initial idea on canvas to the finished product. Many times the finished work, while retaining some components, has gone in a completely different direction. Philip also spent time talking how the use of shapes, values, colors and placement on the canvas causes the viewer to explore the entire painting.
Featured artist for "Member's Share" was Ed Whitmire. A PowerPoint presentation by Paula Grookett featuring artwork from the TAG website entertained members prior to the meeting.
